I was always fascinated by the fact that the doctor who completes university\u00a0studies, is not really a doctor, but an accomplished physician who spent\u00a05 (or more) years studying various diseases, and after years of learning has to\u00a0go through decades of learning through practice, to become good at what he does. From this perspective, I ask why (on earth) people who wrote 4 lines think that they are writers?! Don’t agree with me, that goes for all of you who have published 2-3 stories or even the whole book.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Not sure\u00a0whether you are aware of the fact that writing at the beginning is\u00a0completely deceiving. It’s similar\u00a0to\u00a0any other skill: at first glance it looks very easy until you try it. Suppose it was a plane ride (especially if you watched\u00a0too many movies in which everyone who knows how to hold the steering wheel successfully land the plane that is crashing), while in fact only when you sit on the pilot’s place, you realize that is not exactly as it seems. And while driving plane can leave fatal consequences for you and your passengers, writing is a lot more subtle: your first story may\u00a0look just fine (especially if you are literate), although at later point is\u00a0probably quite weak.<\/p>\n

Of course, since you are on my blog, and you’re interested in writing, you probably have your “reasons” why you are writing. In the introductory part of this best online course\u00a0ever<\/a> (which is by the way\u00a0free), you have to answer yourself why are you \u00a0writing; you have a great idea for a book, you’ve always been good with words, writing is your passion or if you have some other reason.<\/p>\n

However, do\u00a0your reasons make you a\u00a0writer?<\/p>\n

Unfortunately – NO. Being a writer is not an easy job like I\u00a0write ergo I am a writer<\/em> (unless you’re a wunderkind, but then you’re\u00a0not reading this). Yes, writing is an art, but (creative) writing have\u00a0to be mastered as a skill first<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

You have the talent, you have the desire and the occasional attacks of inspiration, but to learn to write as a writer, you will also need – time. Of course, this is not such a bad news as it seems at first. If\u00a0writing was an easy task, trust me that my book would be a bestseller<\/a> already, and I wouldn’t\u00a0run a blog at all. And we would all be happy and rich writers who receive million bucks\u00a0for each story that we publish. But then any new book would have absolutely no meaning, and our literary effect wouldn’t exist.<\/p>\n

Writing is, simply, like any other profession. No, you do not become a writer overnight<\/strong>. And inspiration and motivation are to blame, as\u00a0many authors say that they miss them\u00a0on daily basis. But, as the title of this article suggests, screw\u00a0inspiration! While I’m not denying that I will\u00a0one day write a text on how to find the motivation to write, motivation is nothing but a habit<\/strong>. Therefore, create\u00a0a habit to write and this will create a motivation, and\u00a0with the arrival of motivation also comes – inspiration.<\/p>\n

Introduction to the task<\/strong><\/p>\n

Do you go to the dentist twice a year and your teeth look amazing? No you don’t, you wash them every day. Do you do 5 push-ups and you abs\u00a0like Brad Pitt in Fight Club<\/a>? No you don’, you go to the gym 4 times a week. These little, everyday, boring tasks are what make your teeth and your body look fantastic. There is no good genetics<\/em>, nor the body of Daniel Craig in James Bond is inherited (feel free to replace the actor and body type at your\u00a0sole discretion). The same applies to your writing. There is no extraordinary talent<\/em> nor I write when I have inspiration<\/em>. You have to\u00a0be persistent and write, write, write… And write some more. Perfect husband is not the one who buys his wife a bouquet for her\u00a0birthday and take her\u00a0to the restaurant for Valentine’s Day. No, perfect husband is the one who says good morning love<\/em> before he\u00a0looks at his\u00a0phone. Who opens door for her and carries bags from the market. The one who listens when she has a bad day. And so no, writing is not something that happens overnight. This is something that can be built up and the result is obtained with continuity.<\/p>\n

This doesn’t mean that you are writing “bad” right now. On the contrary. Unlike the\u00a0airplane ride, for writing you only\u00a0need a little literacy and little exercises. Ask yourself – what you want to achieve with writing? Where are you as a writer in\u00a0a year and where in five? Write down your goals in a diary or planner. What can you achieve in a month? What are the obstacles that you encounter? What makes it easy to write (besides reading this blog)? And to show you how you are going to be in the best writer’s form ever in just a month, here one\u00a0completely crazy task.<\/p>\n

Task: Improvising Inspiration<\/h4>\n

Type<\/strong>: requires\u00a0feedback<\/p>\n

Langth<\/strong>: 500\u00a0words<\/p>\n

In the following week, find 30 minutes a day to write. Write every day a text of 500 words on one of the following subjects:<\/p>\n

Aim of the task<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, you read that right. The exercise lasts for the whole week and requires you to write every day! Some of these titles you have experience in (eg. adolescence), while some are not\u00a0(eg. 13 ways of palm reading). The point of the exercise is to develop concentration and improvisation, as well as to develop the habit of writing; something like learning notes before you design your own melody. When you finish this exercise, you can make up your own headlines or put together several texts into a\u00a0story. While you may not still be recognised\u00a0author, you will be closer to your\u00a0goal and see your\u00a0own progress… And at the end of the week, you will have as much as 7 stories completed! Or maybe even 31, if you wish to continue writing…<\/p>\n

Although this exercise lasts for a whole month, I invite you to share one text\u00a0on one of the topics in the comments. Also, once you write your text, evaluate the text of someone who has already made a comment, and be sure to leave a meaningful suggestion; list what you like and what doesn’t sound good, explain why and suggest changes.
